And so I began…What form should my passion take? Being the universal symbol of comfort and happiness, cookies seemed like the natural choice. What would I name my new company? My roommate at the time suggested One Girl Cookies…a name that suggested simplicity and charm and exactly what I wanted the cookies to be.
How would I package them? It was inconceivable to not somehow honor my family in this new endeavor, for which they were partially responsible. Their photos on the boxes was my way of sharing them with my audience something that seemed so appropriate for such a personal venture. What types of cookies should I offer?
I loved the idea of enjoying two bites of one flavor and then two bites of completely another. Why be forced to make decisions? So I made the cookies petite and diverse so that several could be savored. What about naming the cookies? Thumbprint or sandwich cookie was too detached. I chose actual girls names—ones that were evocative of a simple, romantic time and place. Some were the names of my relatives, others were not, but they all fit the “personality” of their namesake. For instance, the shortbread, caramel, chocolate layer bar was rich and sultry. Lucia was a perfect name.
