How would I package them? It was inconceivable to not somehow honor my family in this new endeavor, for which they were partially responsible. Their photos on the boxes was my way of sharing them with my audience something that seemed so appropriate for such a personal venture. What types of cookies should I offer?
I loved the idea of enjoying two bites of one flavor and then two bites of completely another. Why be forced to make decisions? So I made the cookies petite and diverse so that several could be savored. What about naming the cookies? Thumbprint or sandwich cookie was too detached. I chose actual girls names—ones that were evocative of a simple, romantic time and place. Some were the names of my relatives, others were not, but they all fit the “personality” of their namesake. For instance, the shortbread, caramel, chocolate layer bar was rich and sultry. Lucia was a perfect name.
How ironic that unbeknownst to me, it was my great grandmother’s name. I did not come to realize that until I read Nanny’s journal almost three years after I had chosen that name…it was fate.
